Class Schedule - Welcome!

We want you to enjoy yourself at the FCBD Studio, please take a moment to read our advice below. We look forward to seeing you!

Our classes start promptly. Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to class start. Studio opens 1/2hr before each class. Come on in and shop!

Our classes are for women only.  For insurance purposes, children are not allowed in the studio or unattended in the store/waiting area. We do not provide childcare.

The new 6 week course will start Tuesday 6 Jan,  Friday 9 Jan and Saturday 10 Jan 2009. No pre-registration necessary, just arrive 15-20 minutes prior to class start time.

Class cancellations: no class Thanksgiving Thu 27 Nov and Fri 28 Nov (yes class Sat 29 Nov). Studio closed for Winter Holidays 21 Dec 2008-4 Jan 2009.

Dance Fundamentals (Level 1)

60 minutes $10
drop-in, all levels

Tuesdays 6:30-7:30
Fridays 6:30-7:30
Saturdays 11:00-12:00

Learn to dance by drilling the basics in fun combinations. Using both slow movements and fast steps we'll get you dancing in your first class! All basic movements and group formations in a six-week cycle including posture and body awareness, zils and music. You are welcome to drop-in on this class after the course has started as we have plenty of review built into each class. Intro to partner and group dancing. However, you must arrive 10-15 minutes to class start. The agenda starts on Tue and repeats Fri and Sat of the same week so you can alternate days an still stay on schedule.

*Best class for beginners.

Dress for FCBD dance classes: Full skirt or loose pants, hip scarf, short top or leotard (just wear something comfortable). Bare feet or dance shoes only in dance studio. You will need a pair of zils (finger cymbals). You can purchase at the studio or bring your own.

Tribal Combinations (Level 2)

60 minutes $10
drop-in, must have experience in FCBD Fundamentals Level One (above)

Tuesdays 7:45-8:45
Fridays 7:45-8:45
Saturdays 12:15-1:15

Refine individual technique by drilling basic steps and their variations in creative combinations. Although open to all levels, this class is best used simultaneously with Dance Fundamentals as there are no descriptions of the basic steps. To take this class you must understand partner and group dancing (Level One, above.) Twelve-week cycle.

*This class is the next step after Fundamentals.

Drills (Level 3)

90 minutes $10
check with a teacher about your skill level before attending this class

Saturdays 2-3:30pm

Technique for Intermediate and Advanced steps used in Improv Classes. May include floorwork, sword and basket balancing and other specialty work.

Dress is any color skirt and choli or leotard, hip shawl and pantaloons. Hair tied up off face and neck. You will need your own zils. Bring a headwrap and knee pads for specialty work.

Improv Choreography (Level 3)

Saturdays 3:45-5pm

Working in duet,trio and chorus formations, set up choreographies using the full range of movements. You must have experience in Dance Fundamentals and Tribal Combinations to join this class.

First half of class is Drills, second half is using the 'Drills' steps in Improv Choreo (see above for descriptions.) This class is also Salon Prep for our student performances.* You must have experience in Dance Fundamentals and Tribal Combinations to join this class.

Sat 22 Nov and 20 Dec: Observe the Creative Process 3:45-5pm at the FCBD Studio
An opportunity for FCBD intermediate/advanced students to perform for a live audience in a casual setting. Students will be challenged with a set of music and real life performance situations. Audience will consist of FCBD students, troupe members and guests. Instructor will guide both participating students and audience members in observing the creative process. Please invite your friends! Stay tuned for more dates!
Free to FCBD students, $5 for guests.
Dance Conditioning with Anita Lalwani
Bellydance specific fitness training with foam rollers, physio balls, tubing, and free weights!
Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, FCBD instructor and troupemember Anita Lalwani has designed a fitness program to make you a better bellydancer! Develop the core strength, posture and inner intelligence that will improve your dancing and improve your health. The FCBD studio becomes a gym, we turn up the music and start having fun drilling moves that will transform your dance technique. This is a progressive 8-week course with 2 make up sessions. Classes will be held at the FCBD Studio on Sunday mornings from 10 – 11:30AM. All levels of dancers are welcome.

Sun 16 Nov 2:30-5:30pm : Dance Therapeutics: Saving your Bellydance Body with Deb Rubin
Drawing from Yoga therapy, Traditional Thai-Yoga Massage, Feldenkrais, partner yoga, and Deb’s personal “stash” of dance therapeutics, this workshop  offers effective, tried-and-true, therapeutic techniques to radically shift bellydance posture; generously improve flexibility, range of motion, and increased space for fluid dancing and layering of technique; prevent dance injury and pain; and build the foundational core strength and awareness to directly support your dancing and increase health.   We will learn a unique series to release the low back, hips, gluts, shoulders, spine and side body, and go over healthy backbending to save your low back. All of this will be applied to tribal fusion bellydance posture, technique, and stylization. A necessary foundation for any level dancer, of any style of bellydance.
Please bring yoga mat and strap or scarf.

*About Deb Rubin, MA, CMT, RYT:
A life-long dancer of many genres, Deb was a 5 year member of UltraGypsy, and regular sub for Jill Parker's classes until fall, 2007. Most recently, she assisted Rachel Brice at her Tribal Massive Intensive, performed with Heather Stants & Urban Tribal at Tribal Fest 08, and produced SF Mecca Immersion.  A holistic health counselor, yoga teacher, and integrative bodyworker for past 10 years,  Deb is also the founder of SattyaBody HealingArts and Dance Collective, and specializes in dancer injury and rehab.

Thu 4 Dec 7:30-9pm : New moves by Australian Sister Studio Ghawazi Caravan!!!
In this class you will learn some exciting new moves developed by Ghawazi Caravan's Artistic Director, Devi Mamak*
Devi Has developed both fast & slow moves such as the Pulse Turn, Loco Camel, the Rainbow, Arabic Double Turn, Triangle Step and Push Forward & Back, which will all work beautifully with your pre-exsisting ATS steps.
 We will also look at exsisting steps such as the Half-time Walking Shimmy and the Egyptian Sevilliana and give them a new twist. If time allows Devi will share with you some exciting ideas suitable for ATS choreography.
This class is open to students who are familiar with the ATS vocabulary covered in Dance Fundamentals Level One and Tribal Combinations Level Two.

*About Devi:
After studying ATS with Carolena in San Francisco, Devi continued her studies when she returned to Australia. Now a full fledged Sister Studio* and certified ATS Teacher, she brings you ideas developed by Ghawazi Caravan based on the classic ATS format. A professional pianist, she is the mother of two and host to Carolena's yearly workshop in Blue Mountains, "OZ".
*Sister Studios are teachers that have aligned their work with FCBD. They are encouraged to create new steps and combinations to submit to Carolena for inclusion in the FCBD vocabulary.
